Noise Management – Splendour in the Grass and Falls Festival

Splendour in the Grass

Event Noise Management, the specialist Entertainment Noise group within ANE has provided noise management services and advice to North Byron Parklands since 2014. North Byron Parklands, one of Australia’s largest purpose built venues, is home to the iconic Splendour in the Grass music festival and the Queensland Falls Festival. Both of these 3 - 4 day events are held annually at North Byron Parklands.

Acoustic Modelling
Event Noise Management staff have worked closely with the management team at North Byron Parklands to develop innovative ways of actively managing sound emissions from the venue during major events. Propagation of sound in a local area varies significantly as a result of local topographic features, and weather conditions are a major influence. Being able to actively manage event sound levels to minimise community impacts, whilst at the same time maximising the sound quality in the venue, requires a significant and co-ordinated effort on the part of the event production team and the acoustic consultant.

The approach adopted by Event Noise Management is to operate a noise control centre with a live feed of real time data from each major stage. This, in combination with experienced personnel measuring external to the venue to verify the outcome of any changes to noise emissions in the venue, allows the ENM team to provide specific advice to the production team in a proactive way such that noise impacts during the event can be minimised. In our experience, active sound control at major events of this type is the most effective means of achieving acceptable outcomes to all stakeholders.

Conclusion - Results
In addition to providing event noise management services, the ENM team completed detailed modelling and assessment of the potential for noise impacts from the venue for the planning application for the permanent approval. The noise assessment considered the range of events that could potentially be held at North Byron Parklands. The assessment included derivation of a suite of acoustic criteria that accounted for the sensitivity of the local acoustic environment, as well as the control measures that could be adopted to minimise noise impacts. The permanent approval for the venue was subsequently granted, and the Noise Management Plan for the venue developed by ENM was approved.
